How do you get OC design help?

Posted by KhaosKitsune617 - April 24th, 2023

I've been struggling to get good OC design, outfit and hairstyle ideas. I've been looking at different media for help, but its no use. How do you guys get ideas for what an OC should look like?

For that one, honestly, I have no idea. Sometimes I reuse certain parts of my OCs, such as the hair or something, and change those. Outfits, well, I try to make different outfits up, even if they don't seem realistic.

I take inspiration from my favourite media. Outfits, hairstyles, and even colour palettes came from a cartoon or two.

But if that is not working for you, I suggest taking your OC(s) and see if the OC needs to add/change a certain asset. Ex: OC needs a different hair colour.

I also like mixing up certain media to make OC designs. It helped me create designs for the comic I’m currently working on.

In conclusion, media you like can make an impact in OC creation.

Go to a clothing store, any clothing store. You don't have to buy anything, but if it helps buy a few outfits. Otherwise merely take pics of them at the store enough to give you a full picture. Then just see which outfits fit well with your art style. Same with Hairstyles. Visit a barbershop or a wig store only this time, because they're stylists, they have picture references of different hairstyles and pick the ones that feel right for you.

In terms of what inspires my OC's well, they just simply come to me. S.T. is the closest to my real self, albeit in a romanticized fantastic way. Light Harmony on top of you inspiring the idea, was based around the idealistic, but realistic side of my life's rules and moral codes. Eldra and The Detective were based off my love of Film Noir and H.P. Lovecraft.

For me? I just make it from a dress up game, once i feel good with it, i save it and draw it with my own artstyle

ill tell you something that i think many should consider because many make the mistake of overcomplicating a character in hopes of being original and unique and top the "competition", i say: make something simple enough to be remembered by the viewers but complex enough to be interesting to look at. strike the perfect balance and youd have yourself one cool character B)

I do what i do
My brain gives me the ideas
